5 Ways to get sound from a TV to an AV Receiver / amplifier

  1. HDMI ARC. The newest method. Using a HDMI cable you can connect a HDMI ARC compatible TV port with a HDMI ARC compatible amplifier to transmit the TV sound and as a bonus, control the amplifier with your TV remote (usually).
  2. Optical Cable. Most TV's will have an optical cable output to transmit digital sound to another speaker source, such as a speaker amplifier.
  3. Digital Coax. Some TV's and most amplifiers have an option to use a digital coaxial sound transmission, via a normal RCA cable.
  4. AV output. Some older TV's output sound via the old red and white connectors on the back of the TV. This is an analogue signal, so you won't get surround sound features. Nearly all amplifiers including the latest still support this sound input method.
  5. Head Phone jack. If all else fails, you can use the headphone jack on your TV with something like a head jack to stereo output cable to connect to your amplifier.

A real-life example from today, 16th April 2019 follows:

"Ella in Varsity Lakes, finally moved into her own home and got all her TV equipment and speakers out of storage. She needed expert help setting it all up again so she called TV Magic Gold Coast. When we arrived, we found a home theatre surround sound speaker kit, an apple tv, an old VCR and a DVD player to setup with her main living room TV. After we untangled the wires, we got the surround sound speakers firing again. Ella had never figured out how to get the normal TV shows to come through her speakers before, only DVD's, so she was super stoked when we showed her. Basically, she'd been missing the optical cable that runs between the TV and her mini amplifier, plus the know how in terms of the correct settings to have her amp on when she wants to listen to TV show sound."

"Henry was annoyed that he spent a lot of money on a good quality surround sound speaker, AV receiver setup for his Varsity Lakes townhouse but could only get a below average sound. When we arrived, we found that Henry had used existing speaker cabling from a previous home theatre system was not suitable for his new much more powerful speakers and amplifier. After we re-ran the speaker cable with better, thicker, oxygen free cabling, we demonstrated the significant improve in volume. Then we showed Henry how to change the sound output settings himself so he could find what he thought sounded best when listening to different things. IE. you have your amplifier settings different for listening to music as oppose to watching a movie."
