Cedia Certified Steven Rule

An interview with Steven Rule by Kirsten L

K: Hi Steve! So I hear you're good with home cinemas!

S: Hi Kirsten. Yes I am! Well I'm pretty good I guess. I'm one of only 5-10 people in Australia that has the qualifications I do, with THX certification, CEDIA, Control 4, Sovance, Savant etc and I've worked with all the other guys and know them well and I was voted by many of our customers as being the best. I was given the nickname "Stereo Steve"

K: Wow! And how or what do you think made the customers vote you as #1?

S: Well it was me and one other guy, who is also; very, very good! He does everything by the book. When you're building a home cinema lets say you have a $500k budget you have to do certain things by the book. We both had to fly to the U.S to do this specialised training back in the 90s and early 2000's. We've both done every course and qualification you can think of for surround sound, acoustics, sound engineering, visual calibrations and audio/visual training courses and well they teach you to do everything "by the book". In the real world however, an installation space or a building is hardly ever "perfect". You have to sometimes get creative and go custom. Ie. In residential installations home theatre builds are often an after thought! The rooms aren't a perfect square, or a perfect rectangle. The door can be anywhere the sound leaks can be anywhere.. the building is built to be a home.. not to be a commercial cinema but when you're working with the budgets I've worked with you can't do every element by the book. And so that's where I was voted number one because I was able to do everything "by the book" but also achieve the same results by "breaking some of the nerdy audio visual rules" .. breaking some of the "do not ever break these rules" kind of rules!  If you catch my drift?

K: I do! Well wow! So what's the most expensive home cinema you've ever built?

S: Oh it would be around the $1.5mil range.

K: Whaaatt!! That's more than most people's houses!  Who have you built cinemas for?

S: I built a home cinema for a very well known Hollywood celebrity. Sorry I signed a non disclosure agreement. I  have also installed home cinemas for numerous B celebrities and Australian celebrities. Same story. I can't name drop. I signed actual paperwork to keep all their professional and personal lives confidential. I am not allowed to say whether they owned a cat, owned a toaster, what car they drive, where they live, who they are or what clothes they wear; or that anything ever happened at all! lol

K: Whoa. How interesting. Can you tell me this? Have you ever received a tip? What's the biggest tip you've ever received?

S: I can. One customer gave me a $60,000 TIP.

K: Excuse me!

S: Yep!

K: Oh I need to know more about that! Later on. So what do you do for fun?

S: When I am not working you'll find me on the Teewah Beach in my Caravan with a beer in hand.

K Nice. And what's your fav. place on earth?

S: Coral Bay, WA

K: And last question, what's one thing not many people know about you?

S: Back in the 70s I was on Rompa Room TV show as a child and I still have the video
