An interview with Signal Sam by Amanda T

A: What is your favourite type of job to do?

RR: Favourite job? Wall-mounting a 1000 inch TV onto a brick wall with zero wobble. I’m talking laser-level straight. Bolted. Anchored. Locked in like leg day.

When I mount a TV or secure an antenna, I don’t “hope” it holds. I know it holds. That’s not going anywhere.

A: Where is your favourite place on earth?

RR: In the Gym and the my second favourite place is anywhere where a cyclone is happening. I like to show off by getting on the roof in 250km/hr winds and holding a 40ft antenna upright (with zero wobble) ...   with one hand.. That's just one of my many talents. I just like to make sure it's Tough. Secure. & Jacked.

A: What is the most awkward customer experience you've ever had?

RR: One client said, “Are you sure that bracket will hold? Are. You. Sure. .... "

I didn't bother explaining load ratings, stud integrity, anchor strength, or structural distribution for eight minutes (like Signal Sam would) I just  did a small, controlled flex next to the mounted TV, then proceeded to hang off the top of the TV.. from my ankles and do up-side down crunches .. then I flipped around and did some weighted Chin Ups off the installation (all whilst not touching the ground) .. If the TV can hold my weight, It's going no where my friend.

I may have also said, “Slackness is a weakness.” Long story short the TV didn’t move. The Client didn’t move. The client's confidence level was maxed out after that.

A: Biggest tip from a client?

RR: After a full install — wall mount, cable concealment, Wi-Fi upgrade — a customer handed me $50 and said, “Mate, that thing is solid.”

I don’t work for tips. I work for structural dominance. But I did frame the fifty.

A: What are your 3 biggest achievements?

RR:

  1. Mounted a 1000 inch TV above a fireplace where two other companies refused the job -  All by myself.
  2. Installed a rural antenna system through that survived storm winds. The storm ripped the tin sheets off the roof and the fence. But my antenna was still there. It didn’t budge.
  3. Did a job in an apartment building one day where the lift was broken. The job was on the 17th floor. I ran up and down those stairs 22 x times .. that's just a warm up for me.

A: What did you do before you joined TV Magic?

RR: I specialised in heavy-duty load testing for trucks, mining & machinery. I also use to be an Olympic weight lifting coach.

A: When you were a child, what did you want to become when you grew up?

RR: A superhero. Turns out, mounting a TV so securely that it survives kids, dogs, and accidental shoulder bumps is basically the same thing.

A: Two things most people don’t know about you?

RR:

  1. I'm allergic to butterflies.
  2. I whisper “That’s not going anywhere” before I tighten the final bolt. Every time.
