An interview with Signal Sam by Amanda T

A: What is your favourite type of job to do?

SS: Anything that doesn't involve getting dirty. Oh, and I'm quite happy to watch the client do the job for me - (I'll tell them how to do it of course) and they'll just pay me to give them company whilst they do all the dirty work. 

A: Where is your favourite place on earth?

SS: In front of a mirror... or mounting a TV or mirror for a client. Of course, it has to be squeeky clean (so I can see my reflection in it). When I mark that wall and say, “Trust me,” you can. I don’t just find studs… I am one.

A: What is the most awkward customer experience you've ever had?

SS: When the client asked me to go up into the attic ..  urrghhh gross .. Stan does not dooo thaaatt. 

A: Biggest tip from a client?

SS: After a premium wall mount and antenna tidy-up, a client handed me $80 and said, “That looks a million bucks". ( I thought she was talking about me). I nodded modestly. But internally? I was walking a slow-motion runway. She just made such good eye contact. 

A: What are your 3 biggest achievements?

SS:

  1. I'm an expert at finding the centre of a stud, but one day I found the centre of universe - I was just looking in the mirror
  2. I once got a testimonial from a client that got 4mil likes on Insta... The job was a full-feature wall I built for a $20million mansion but the client said it still looked better with me standing next to it. 
  3. I've been known to fixed broken / cracked TV screens .. just by looking at them - (Kind of a super-power that is the opposite to the Snow White story). The TV screen kind of has no option but to fix itself, when it sees me - because it simply MUST reflect my perfection. 

 

A: What did you do before you joined TV Magic?

SS: I specialised in interior feature upgrades — shelves, mirrors, statement pieces. Basically, I’ve always made walls look better. TV Magic just gave me bigger screens… and more admiration.

A: When you were a child, what did you want to become when you grew up?

SS: A model. Or an architect. Or both.

A: Two things most people don’t know about you?

SS: 

  1. I only eat food served on proper silverware. Plastic forks are beneath me.
  2. I practise my “installation reveal face” in reflective surfaces. It’s subtle. Confident. Zoolander-level. And yes — when Zoolander 3 comes out, I’ll be in it. Probably mounting a 120-inch TV in a penthouse scene.
